Prairieland announces new CEO

Prairieland Park’s Board of Directors is pleased to announce that it has named Dan Kemppainen as its new Chief Executive Officer effective November 10, 2022. Kemppainen’s 25-year tenure as the non-profit corporation’s Chief Financial Officer affords him a deep knowledge and understanding of the organization. His passion for Saskatoon and the Prairieland community will continue to serve the organization well. He succeeds Mark Regier who will remain with the corporation as an Advisor until his retirement on December 31, 2022. We thank Mark for his 31 years of service and his leadership, which has led to the great success that Prairieland Park enjoys today.

“Our Board of Directors is thrilled to promote Dan to this role to lead Prairieland into its next phase,” says board chair, Steve Chisholm. “Dan possesses the qualities and experience to continue growing Prairieland’s positive impact in the community and lead the many projects that are on the horizon.”

Kemppainen held increasingly responsible positions with the corporation, including overseeing the Food and Beverage Department and Sports On Tap, in addition to his role of CFO. He was instrumental in the conceptualization and development of Prairieland’s Sports On Tap and Kickin’ Horse Saloon western-themed beer gardens and concert venue at the annual Exhibition Week. He skillfully oversees the management of the corporation’s $44-million in assets. As a strong proponent of technology, he led the implementation of technology solutions to streamline Prairieland’s processes and improve operational efficiency.

Dan received the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation over 20 years ago and is a member of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada, holding the designation of CPA, CMA.

“I could not be more grateful to accept the position of CEO at Prairieland and continue to collaborate with the talented team to serve the community,” says Kemppainen. “This organization has been part of my life for several decades, which was intentional; I have been part of its history and I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead its future,” he continues. “My goal is to build on the growth and achievements of the past. Prairieland will maintain its high standards in delivering quality event services and promoting the agricultural sector. And we will continue to expand our impact in these sectors while bringing new projects and services to life to embrace and reflect our constantly evolving community.”

Kemppainen’s appointment concludes the national search process. “It became evident to the search committee and the Board that the best candidate was already in our midst and that Dan’s dedication and long-term vision would serve the organization very well,” said Chisholm. “As we look to the future and what lies ahead for Prairieland, we are confident that Dan is the right person to lead the corporation, build on its 136-year legacy, and design its next chapter.”

Kemppainen will assume the role of CEO on November 10, 2022. Please join the Board of Directors of Prairieland Park in congratulating and supporting Dan Kemppainen in his new role.
